SUMMARY:Panel discussion - Climate on trial: lessons from the Milieudefensie versus Shell case
DESCRIPTION:On 12 November 2024\, the The Hague Court of Appeal delivered a complex judgment in the Milieudefensie v. Shell This link opens in a new tab climate litigation case\, setting aside the groundbreaking 2021 District Court ruling.  \n\n\n\nAt issue in the appeal was whether Shell must have reduced its CO2 emissions by 45% in 2030 compared to 2019. The court of appeal ruled that Shell is obliged to reduce its CO₂ emissions\, but that it was unable to determine which percentage should apply. The court of appeal therefore rejected the claims of Milieudefensie. \n\n\n\nWhile the appeal judgment may not have delivered the decisive victory climate activists sought\, it offers significant insights into developing judicial attitudes towards corporate responsibility for climate change.  \n\n\n\nJoin the Asser Institute and SEVEN – the Climate Institute (University of Amsterdam) This link opens in a new tab – for a critical examination of this pivotal legal moment in climate litigation. This panel discussion will dissect the implications of the Court of Appeal’s judgment from different angles and explore its significance for future climate accountability strategies.  \n\n\n\nThe Court of Appeal’s judgment\, while not a straightforward victory\, provides critical lessons for how corporations might be held responsible for their climate impact. The case highlighted that while Shell was not legally compelled to meet a specific 45% emissions reduction target\, states and private actors have a shared responsibility under international human rights law to combat climate change that can influence private law obligations. \n\n\n\nNotably\, the judgment coincides with the European Union’s newly adopted Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive\, which will significantly reshape how companies like Shell must approach their climate transition strategies. This directive represents a crucial legal framework that will guide corporate climate responsibilities in the coming years.  \n\n\n\nThe event will explore key themes emerging from the judgment\, including:  \n\n\n\n\nThe shared responsibilities of states and private actors in addressing climate change \n\n\n\nThe horizontal effect of human rights obligations on corporate conduct \n\n\n\nThe evolving legal landscape of corporate climate accountability and the use of strategic litigation \n\n\n\nThe role of international guidelines and emerging EU directives in shaping corporate climate strategies \n\n\n\n\nThere will be a short presentation of the case\, followed by a round of questions facilitated by the moderator\, and an exchange with the room. For those attending in person\, there will be a drinks reception after the event.  \n\n\n\nIn-person and online participation is available. \n\n\n\nModerator:Stephanie Triefus (Asser Institute) This link opens in a new tab  This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\nSpeakers:  \n\n\n\n\nAndre Nollkaemper – founder of SEVEN (University of Amsterdam) This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nSjoukje van Oosterhout – Senior team lead of the climate case against Shell (Milieudefensie) This link opens in a new tab \n\n\n\n\n\nAnneloes Kuiper (Utrecht University) This link opens in a new tab\n\n\n\nChiara Macchi (Wageningen University & Research) This link opens in a new tab (online) \n\n\n\n\nThis event is supported by the Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research This link opens in a new tab

SUMMARY:Just Peace Movie Night: All That Breathes
DESCRIPTION:Part of The Hague Climate Week  \n\n\n\nDuring The Hague Climate Week\, in collaboration with Filmhuis and Movies that Matter\, we present the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film All That Breathes. This event is part of the Just Peace Movie Nights series\, a program that brings important issues around peace and justice to the attention of a wide audience through film and storytelling. After the film screening\, we will engage in a conversation with experts on topics such as the rights of nature\, environmental law\, climate justice\, the impact of environmental pollution on biodiversity and the opportunities we as citizens have to take action on this ourselves. \n\n\n\nAbout All That Breathes \n\n\n\nThe documentary follows brothers Saud and Nadeem\, who began caring for injured birds of prey 20 years ago after discovering that the local animal hospital only treated vegetarian birds. Their home is home to dozens of raptors and owls\, mostly black kites. These birds populate the city in large numbers\, and within the Indian Muslim community it is believed that they are capable of eating trouble. New Delhi\, one of the most densely populated and perhaps most polluted cities in the world\, nevertheless buzzes with life. In beautifully filmed scenes\, animals appear in the most unexpected places\, as if they have always belonged there. \n\n\n\nThe brothers describe how life is constantly experimenting and adapting to changing conditions. For example\, birds sing louder to drown out city noise and have discovered that cigarette butts help fight parasites. All That Breathes\, by Indian filmmaker Shaunak Sen\, is an intriguing and layered documentary about the brothers’ rescue efforts in New Delhi\, where both animals and humans struggle with the effects of pollution. With humor and wisdom\, the two Muslim brothers show how everything in nature – from fungi to humans – is interconnected. Although the city is often considered a living organism\, this film makes clear how true that cliché is. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nDr. Lorenzo Pellegrini\, a Professor of Economics of Environment and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)\n\n\n\nDaniel Eggleston\, a consultant focused on policy\, programming\, and research for IDLO’s Climate Justice portfolio\n\n\n\nJiske van Oeffelt\, World’s Youth for Climate Justice campaigner and expert in Environmental Sciences and nature rights\n\n\n\n\nProgram \n\n\n\nDoors open at 19:00\, and drinks are available in the café. The film screening begins at 19:10 and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. After the official program\, we cordially invite attendees to stay for informal networking and drinks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign up here!

SUMMARY:Understanding Climate Violence
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging evening as we unpack the who\, where\, what\, and whys of climate-related violence. How is climate change contributing to violence? In a rapidly warming world\, what can be done to stifle the threat of worse hostilities down the line and limit the impact on communities? And\, amid cascading risks\, how is climate security overlapping with other pressing issues\, such as inequality and misinformation? \n\n\n\nJournalist Peter Schwartzstein This link opens in a new tab will share many of the key themes and examples from The Heat and the Fury\, his recently published book and the first in-depth exploration of climate-related violence for the casual reader. He has spent more than a decade documenting how climate stresses are bleeding into violence big and small\, including ISIS’s exploitation of collapsing agricultural conditions to bolster its ranks in Iraq––and the impact of rising seas levels on Bangladeshi piracy. \n\n\n\nThis event\, held in the immediate run up to the next global climate conference\, COP29\, aims to engage a broader audience in discussions about climate security risks\, particularly as they intersect with other critical issues. The audience is invited to ask their pressing questions to the speakers. Speakers will also strive to raise public awareness about what has traditionally been a topic confined to academic and security discussions. By highlighting these connections\, the event above all seeks to foster a more comprehensive understanding of the implications of climate change on global relations. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nPeter Schwartstein \n\n\n\nMore speakers will be announced shortly. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a spot!
